Petition: Now for queer people in Hungary

In June 2021, the Hungarian parliament passed an "anti-LGBTQ* propaganda law" adopted from Russia. It prohibits the depiction of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people (LGBTQ*) as well as reporting on queer issues in the media and in all places where children might be present, which is almost everywhere.

The European Commission has decided to take Hungary to the European Court of Justice because this law violates the most fundamental European norms and values. We have high hopes that the Court will rule in favor of protecting LGBTIQ* people. This ruling is important not only to overturn the Hungarian law, but also to prevent similar laws from being enacted in other EU member states such as Poland or Romania.

Therefore, this legal case is a unique opportunity for all of us to send a clear message together: We stand for our EU values of inclusion, equality, the rule of law, and democracy. This is our chance to show Viktor Orbán's government that citizens from all EU member states despise his anti-LGBTQ* rhetoric and laws. The community needs your support to convince our government to join the European Commission's proceedings and make it clear that these "anti-LGBTQ* propaganda laws" are not welcome in Hungary, Germany, or anywhere else in the EU. We therefore ask you to sign the EU-wide petition by the organizations Forbidden Colours, Reclaim, Budapest Pride, and Háttér by February 28, 2023, urging Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to join the proceedings and tell Viktor Orbán: Enough is enough. Join us in speaking out against Orbán's anti-LGBTQ* propaganda law.

Berlin, February 13, 2022: The European Commission initiated infringement proceedings against Hungary for its anti-LGBTQ* propaganda laws. EU member states now have six weeks to join the legal action. With a Europe-wide petition from several NGOs, we aim to convince as many member states as possible to take a stand against these anti-LGBTQ* tendencies in Europe.
